The distal airways are very important in many patients with asthma. Inflammation of the distal airways is associated with fatal asthma, nocturnal asthma, and recurrent exacerbations, even if the large airways are not involved. So it is very important that the entire airway be treated when one is pharmacologically intervening in asthma therapy.
