The distal airways are a prominent site of inflammation in asthma and play a key role in clinical manifestations and therapeutic response. Distal lung inflammation is often observed even in mild asthma and normal pulmonary function test readings, as is the case with Dan.
Distal airway inflammation:
- More severe than large airway inflammation
- Associated with nocturnal asthma and fatal asthma exacerbations
- Increases risk of recurrent exacerbations
- Mounting evidence of its role in lung remodeling
For asthma treatment to be the most effective, the entire airway, including the distal lung, must be targeted.
