Patient Info > Using Your HFA Inhaler—Easy as 1-2-3

When you follow the instructions for using your new HFA inhaler, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. Each type of HFA inhaler has its own instructions that you should follow. Take the time to get to know your new inhaler and master your technique for using it.

These general tips can help you get the most out of your HFA inhaler:

  • 1. Prime it:
Prime your inhaler before using it for the first time. You also need to prime it if you haven't used it for 2 weeks or if you've dropped it. To prime your inhaler, simply point it away from your face and spray it into the air 3 or 4 times-follow the instructions for your particular device.

  • 2. Keep it Clean:
Be sure to rinse the mouthpiece under warm running water at least once a week. Let it air-dry overnight, and keep the cap on your inhaler when you are not using it. Never submerge your inhaler canister in water or allow it to get wet; this will ruin your inhaler. Be sure to read and follow the cleaning instructions that come with your inhaler.
  • 3. Use Proper Technique:
  • Breathe out through your mouth. Release as much air from your lungs as possible.

  • Place the mouthpiece of your inhaler in the front of your mouth and close your lips around it. Hold it upright and make sure your tongue is below the mouthpiece.

  • Breathe in, slowly and deeply, while you press all the way down on the top of the metal canister with your index finger and then immediately release your finger.

  • Hold your breath for as long as possible after inhaling your medicine. Try to hold it for 10 seconds if you can.

  • If your doctor has prescribed more than 1 puff of your albuterol inhaler, wait 1 full minute between puffs and then repeat these steps. This gives your body time to absorb all of the medicine from the first puff.

Remember to read all the instructions that come with your inhaler and be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about using your HFA inhaler.
